The Cowboy Angel Gideon Yesterday the people in the group I work in organized a Christmas luncheon. It was good, we went for Chinese food and I met lots of people I'd never spoken to before. They're like a little family, albeit of the strange and dysfunctional type. I'm becoming more and more convinced of the departure of all common sense and reason the moment a person receives his (or her) PhD and a job of pure research to go with it. The people here are nice, but they seem to have a very tenuous grip on the real world. Still, it was a nice little lunch, all cozied up around those big round tables with the spinning disk in the middle. We were close enough that I kept knocking chopsticks with the girl next to me (becase I'm left-handed and she's not). Today, it's more of the same old stuff at work. I've been given an enormous hardcopy spreadsheet (probably 7 feet long) and I have to take all the changes made in ink on it and put them in the softcopy version. I need a computer on wheels for this I think. Rolling to the end of the spreadsheet to see the changes and then rolling back is a test of patience and memory, that's for sure. In other news, the remote control to our TV has started acting up. Sometimes it just doesn't work. In today's automated world, this is a disaster. Especially considering that our TV/remote control combo allowed us a guide to all the programs happening now and well into the future. It's really an outstanding feature, because you can see what will be on and you can program the TV to record directly from the guide, no programming in the channel and length of recording time. However, in spite of the challenges of our now threatened TV watching system, I managed to watch "One Magic Christmas" last night. It's one of my childhood favourites. There's something satisfying in watching Christmas movies you knew and loved as a kid. I probably haven't seen it in 6 years, but this year seemed right. Hooray for childhood traditions! |
